Intro to Ashtanga: 4 Week Course

This course is for beginners to learn Ashtanga Yoga - and those looking to build a foundation for a life long practice.

Learning from Hady Rasid, a devoted Ashtanga teacher and practitioner, students will learn the fundamentals of Ashtanga Yoga, the sequence of postures in the Primary Series, and understand the philosophy behind the Ashtanga Yoga system.

Ashtanga Yoga is a traditional form of Yoga with a specific sequence of postures, focus on the breath, and meditation. It is based on the eight limbs of Yoga outlined in the Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali.

Each class will begin with a discussion on the fundamentals of Ashtanga Yoga; learning and understanding the breathing technique, energetic locks (Bandhas), and steady gaze (dristi), these three components also known as Tristana. We will progressively move through the sequence of postures each week, with plenty of time for questions and review, students will leave this course with a firm foundation in which they can continue to practice Ashtanga Yoga.

  • Week One: Tristana, Sun Salutations, and the Closing Sequence - Starting at the beginning.. Students will learn about the 3 components that are unique to the Ashtanga Yoga system called Tristana. We will then begin to build our practice! Understanding the methodology, why do we practice, and beginning to find movement with the Sun Salutations and the Closing Sequence.

  • Week Two: Standing Postures - After learning the beginning and end of the Ashtanga Yoga sequence, we will now start adding the Standing Postures! We will discuss and review what we learned in week one, while continuing to build and adding in more postures. Options and variations will be given to accommodate all levels of practitioners.

  • Week Three: Seated Postures & Jumping Back/ Jumping Through - After reviewing and having an open discussion on what we learned in weeks one and two, we will make our way onto the floor to begin understanding the Seated Postures and the transitions between them. This will be playful and explorative! Finding lighter space in the body and as my teacher Elizabeth says, the "go for it" moments Ashtanga provides.

  • Week Four: Review and Practice - Time to review and move through all we have learned and discussed! We will not have learned everything, we will not have mastered this practice in 4 weeks, but we will have begun to understand this journey of self discovery that goes far beyond the asanas. This is just the beginning of the relationship you've begun to build with Ashtanga Yoga. A life long practice to be done with devotion in your heart. "Practice and all is coming." - Pattabhi Jois

This offering runs for four Thursdays - February 5, February 12, February 19 and February 26th, from 6:30 - 8 pm. Rates: $100 for the full series / $75 for Rooted Heart Monthly Unlimited Members.
